Every evening, when you settle down to stream, browse, or binge watch, there’s a tiny machine in the corner quietly humming.
It’s your Wi-Fi router.
But have you ever asked yourself how much electricity does that thing draw everyday? The answer might surprise you. We take a look!
Routers are not energy gluttons. In fact, many typical home routers sip electricity, drawing somewhere between 5 and 20 watts while operating.
In many cases, the average router uses around 6 watts continuously.
Let’s understand the usage
A watt is a rate (that is power), but what you pay for is energy over time (kilowatt-hours, kWh).
- A 6 W router running 24 hours a day uses: 6 W×24 h=144 Wh/day=0.144 kWh/day.6\ \text{W} \times 24\ \text{h} = 144\ \text{Wh/day} = 0.144\ \text{kWh/day}.6 W×24 h=144 Wh/day=0.144 kWh/day.
- Over a 30-day month, that’s about 4.32 kWh just for a router.
- In a year, it sums to roughly 52–53 kWh (assuming continuous operation) for a typical home router.
Depending on your local electricity rate, that might translate into only a few rupees or dollars, usually only a sliver of your total power bill.
Why routers don’t consume a lot power?
Several reasons keep router consumption low:
- They mostly manage data packets, not drive motors or heat coils.
- Their internal hardware (network chips, radios) is optimized for efficiency.
- Many routers have low-activity modes…even though they seldom turn fully off.
Some high end routers or mesh systems, with multiple radios and heavy processing, may draw closer to the upper end of the 20 W range.
Is it worth switching off the router?
Given how small the consumption is, turning off your router occasionally will only yield modest savings.
However, in very tight budgets or green homes, every bit helps. If your router supports scheduled rest or power-save modes, using those may be more practical than physically unplugging it.
You might never see your router’s electricity meter at work, but now you know it’s doing a quiet, reliable job without being an energy monster.
